ENGL 240 Applied English Grammar

Students will analyze the grammar, syntax, history, and conventional usage of the English language, including its definitions, functions, and relationships among its words; the types, styles, and logic of its sentences; and effective use of punctuation. Students will apply these principles through editing, reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking activities and assignments.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and analyze the impact of key events and developments in the history of conventional written
    English usage.
  2. Evaluate current models of grammar and syntax in light of their usefulness to writing.
  3. Analyze grammar patterns and choose those most appropriate for writing tasks.
  4. Apply the principles of standard grammar and usage to editing texts for errors in rhetoric, syntax, case,
    tense, and punctuation.
  5. Design activities using principles of grammar and usage.
  6. Research, summarize, and analyze current controversies concerning grammar or usage and offer
    solutions.
  7. Demonstrate effective oral presentation skills by designing and teaching a grammar lesson and/or
    research results and recommendations
