MUSC 163 World Music

Open to all interested students, this course is an introduction to the music of the world. Students will learn through lectures, guided viewing and listening to selected video and music examples, readings, and in-class discussion.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify elements of music as perceived in the guided listening selections of the course.
  2. 2. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts to classify instruments of the world using
    the Sachs/Hornbostel Classification System.
  3. 3. Articulate with clarity the role of music in societies and cultures around the world.
  4. 4. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into identifying and differentiating musical
    styles and characteristics of various cultures upon hearing them, via written or oral
    communication.
  5. 5. Pose and address questions related to the confluence of creative expression by describing
    how political, social, or religious movement shaped the musical development of selected
    cultures.
  6. 6. Communicate with clear language orally or in writing how elements of non-western musical
    culture have influenced culture, politics, art, and music in the United States.
  7. 7. Identify the role music played in the social, political, and philosophical development of
    selected cultures.
  8. 8. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role on one’s own musical culture and
    preference within a global context.
  9. 9. Identify major trends and composers of the world.
  10. 10. Compare and contrast stylistic similarities and differences amongst music of various
    cultures.
  11. 11. Listen to and appreciate a variety of styles and types of world music.
  12. 12. Discuss a current world music event/development and relate what kind of impact this
    event/development will have on the lives of the people it touches.
