MACH 220 Machine Shop Fundamentals II

This course teaches students to develop a comprehensive job process plan that incorporates the operation of lathes, milling machines, and other machine shop equipment. Instruction includes project setup and layout. Students gain practical experience through hands-on laboratory work that strengthens their skills in advanced machining practices. This course builds on the foundational knowledge covered in MACH 110.

Prerequisite

MACH 110

Hours Weekly

2 hours lecture, 2 hours lab

Course Objectives

  1. Develop and justify a job process plan that sequences lathe, milling, and related machining operations logically based on blueprint specifications and machining best practices.
  2. Establish and verify accurate datums and layout features using a surface plate and layout tools to ensure proper alignment with engineering drawings.
  3. Select and configure appropriate work holding devices, including chucks, collets, vises, stops, and locators, to support efficient and repeatable machining operations.
  4. Set up and operate manual milling machines and engine lathes by aligning equipment, establishing part zero, and determining appropriate spindle speeds, feed rates, and depths of cut to achieve specified tolerances.
  5. Select suitable cutting tool materials and carbide grades based on material properties and machining requirements.
  6. Measure and evaluate machined parts throughout the production process using precision inspection tools to verify conformance with dimensional and tolerance specifications.
