HMDV 150 Rouse Scholars Seminar I

This one-credit course is the first of a two-semester seminar sequence that provides academic foundation for students in the Rouse Scholars Program. In this seminar, students will develop basic skills for scholarly inquiry within and across academic disciplines, and will learn to apply academic perspectives to real-world issues and problems through service and community engagement. Students will also engage in career exploration and develop strategies for academic success in the college environment.

Course Objectives

  1. Develop an understanding of how a range of academic disciplines formulate topics of study and explore scholarly questions.
  2. Apply academic perspectives to complex, interdisciplinary problems and identify the vantage points and contributions of different academic disciplines.
  3. Engage with real-world issues through service and community engagement and articulate how these issues can be addressed through different academic and career fields.
  4. Identify and utilize library and other resources on the HCC campus that support scholarly activity.
  5. Develop a plan for academic success using strategies presented in class.
  6. Identify one's own interests, values, and personality characteristics and apply these insights to the formulation of specific academic and career goals.
