DANC 201 Dance History
This course focuses on the historical development of dance as a performing art, cultural tradition, and/or ceremonial practice. With an emphasis on contemporary dance, content includes an in-depth look at the artists, their philosophies, and the social and cultural context in which they worked.

Course Objectives
- Identify and organize critical theories and concepts related to enduring and contemporary issues of aesthetics and creativity as they relate to the people and events that have affected the development and content of dance historically.
- Reflect upon personal dance experience, and incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity by comparing dance forms from around the world.
- Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze dance as a form of expression in relation to other arts.
- Analyze, evaluate, and formulate ideas and questions related to aesthetic understanding and cultural literacy by examining and comparing specific dance forms.
- Evaluate the authority, credibility, and purpose of primary and secondary sources.
- Research appropriate, relevant sources, and properly attribute content for the purpose of writing about dance.
