ARTS 211 Drawing Studio: The Human Form

Previously ARTT 225. Designed to build upon the methodologies, concepts, and skill sets gained in Drawing I or Drawing II, students are encouraged to further develop their aesthetic approach, technique, and overall direction within their work through experimentation and research into methodologies, concepts, and skill sets as they apply to advanced topics in Drawing: The Human Form. A significant feature of this course is the opportunity for individual student advisement, helping the student to gain insight into his/her personal process and direction as an artist. Faculty may modify the major topics of the course each semester in order to present students with new approaches deemed pertinent to the practice of Drawing Studio: The Human form.

Course Objectives

1. Employ the common drawing media, materials, and tools to make figure drawings that are both descriptive and expressive from observation.
2. Define and apply specialized vocabulary of the human form as the foundation of human structure.
3. Apply the overall proportions of the human form using the head as a unit of measurement.
4. Apply principles and drawing techniques such as line, value, and scale to construct solid placement and pose of the figure in composition.
5. Understand the basic anatomy of human form as a foundation to build upon, including anatomical differences between genders and age.
6. Explore anatomy of head and shoulders in studying portrait in various styles and methods.
7. Distinguish between the aims and methods of historical and contemporary approaches to drawing human form.
8. Analyze and apply the contemporary artistic anatomy to introduce content and meaning within human form with a personal approach.
9. Present a portfolio of works demonstrating various methods and approaches in skillful development of course objectives.
