RADT 291 Principles of Computed Tomography and Instrumentation

In this course students will develop basic knowledge of the principles of computed tomography (CT), CT scanner instrumentation, and image formation and reconstruction. Specific topics included are: introduction to CT, basic CT instrumentation, data acquisition, image post processing, single and multislice spiral CT, three-dimensional CT, radiation dose in CT, and image quality.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Demonstrate basic patient care skills including protocol selection, contrast administration, and acquisition of informed consent to ensure patient safety.
  2. 2. Discuss the design and function of major CT components
  3. 3. Differentiate between conventional and spiral/helical CT scanning
  4. 4. Discuss the processes of CT data acquisition, image processing, and image reconstruction.
  5. 5. Perform procedures in compliance with the ALARA concept and stress the need for special considerations during pediatric imaging.
  6. 6. Examine factors that affect CT image quality and correction techniques.
