NURS 140 Advanced Concepts in Practical Nursing

This course will prepare the practical nurse student to provide care for individuals of all ages experiencing more complex health care problems resulting from the major responses to stress. The student will explore the role of the practical nurse in health care and utilize the steps of the nursing process to provide safe nursing care to a small group of patients. Experience in managing the care provided by auxiliary nursing personnel will be integrated into clinical assignments. Successful completion of this course includes success on the exit examination.

3 hours theory, 6 hours lab weekly

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Utilize knowledge of pathophysiology to prevent and/or minimize health care problems.
  2. 2. Collaborate with the health care team members, patients and significant support persons in acute and,
    long-term care to manage acute and chronic illness.
  3. 3. Participate in activities that promote nursing practice and continued educational development.
  4. 4. Utilize the concepts associated with the five areas of patient needs and aspects of nursing care to
    promote holistic care and continuity of care.
  5. 5. Demonstrate nursing practice that reflects caring, integrity, and principles of safe practice.
  6. 6. Individualize application of the nursing process utilizing critical thinking to facilitate optimum care and
    patient adaptation.
  7. 7. Manage nursing care with attention to professional practice, legal standards and ethical principles.
  8. 8. Implement nursing interventions to optimize health for members of a multicultural society responding to
    stress.
