Impact on Aid of Dropping, Withdrawing, or Never Attending Class

Financial aid awards may increase or decrease if a student’s enrollment changes before the financial aid census date. Under some circumstances, the amount of financial aid awarded may not be enough to pay the total charges on a student’s account. Students who do not receive enough aid to cover their total charges may consider signing up for the tuition payment plan and/or requesting a Federal Direct Loan. Students are responsible for all charges not covered by financial aid.

Financial aid awards are based on the student’s enrollment status as of each semester's financial aid census date. When that status changes, a student’s financial aid awards may need to be adjusted. Courses added or withdrawn after the census date typically do not result in a change in the student’s financial aid eligibility. However, courses that a student never attended will have an NA grade reported by the instructor, and those courses cannot be included in the financial aid enrollment status. Courses dropped after the census date will be evaluated individually to determine whether they can be included when determining aid eligibility. Please refer to our website at www.howardcc.edu/financialaid for more information about the impact of dropping, withdrawing, or never attending a class you registered for.

Students who withdraw from all courses within a semester will be subject to a review of their financial aid awards using the Federal Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) calculation and may owe a balance to the college. Students who stop attending all their courses, even if they do not officially withdraw, will also be subject to a Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) calculation. Students who unofficially withdraw may owe a balance to the college and will have F-grades that impact their GPA since they did not officially withdraw. Please refer to the Return of Title IV Funds policy later in this section.
