RADT 238 Clinical Radiography III

In this course, students will expand previously acquired skills with emphasis on the application of comprehensive didactic knowledge and demonstration of competence in clinical practice to produce quality images in a competency-based clinical setting. Students will be supervised by registered technologists appropriate to the level of competency. Concepts of radiation protection, patient care, equipment operation, quality control, and image production and evaluation will be reinforced. Students will begin rotating to interventional radiology, trauma imaging, and advanced modalities. Clinical Radiography III is the third clinical education component of the program. Medical terminology will be incorporated.

Prerequisite

RADT 126, RADT 127, and RADT 128

Hours Weekly

16 clinical hours weekly

Course Objectives

  1. Correctly identify patient, introduce self, time-out procedure, and document complete patient history.
  2. Review a radiographic order (requisition) and determine projections that can best demonstrate the structures and pathology of interest.
  3. Determine appropriate technical factors (kVp, mAs, SID) prior to positioning the patient.
  4. Properly position the patient, CR, IR, and lead marker and demonstrate the skills required to adjust positioning based on patient status.
  5. Execute the ALARA principle for radiation protection and provide radiation protection for patients, self, and others.
  6. Apply patient privacy and confidentiality requirements.
  7. Critique images and discriminate between unacceptable, acceptable, and optimal image quality.
  8. Display problem-solving/critical thinking skills and determine radiographic positioning modifications necessary based on patient condition and pathology.
