ENES 271 Applied Numerical Methods
Previously "Introduction to MATLAB." This course is designed to introduce numerical methods to engineering students. Students will develop the skills to generate readable, compact, and verifiably correct MATLAB programs to obtain numerical solutions to a wide range of engineering models and to display the results with fully annotated graphics. Students will learn structured programming.

2 hours lecture, 2 hours lab
Course Objectives
- Recognize the broad applicability of MATLAB as an engineering software tool.
- Create fully-annotated 2D and 3D graphics to effectively communicate technical information.
- Construct and debug organized programs using structured and functional programming paradigms to solve a variety of engineering problems.
- Implement a variety of numerical methods for root-finding, solving systems of equations, quadrature, integration of ordinary differential equations, and linear regression.
- Recognize the fundamental limitations of numerical methods, including sources of error.
- Compare and contrast numerical algorithms with respect to efficiency and stability.
