EMSP 290 Emerging Issues in Paramedicine

Emerging Issues in Paramedicine is designed to provide EMT-Paramedics, who received their training in a non-credit-bearing academic setting or training academy, an opportunity to expand upon their education in pursuit of an academic degree. This course is a critical component in the Health Care Professional degree program. Students will use the 14 Attributes described in the EMS Agenda For The Future to identify and explore emerging issues with additional emphasis on current and future trends in the clinical scope of practice. Students will be provided readings and information on appropriate topics to be completed outside of class time. The face-to-face classroom component will be a mixture of content delivery and discussion with a majority of the time spent on student-led interactive discussions and activities designed to reinforce the content. Approximately 1/3 of the course will be spent in an individualized self-directed learning opportunity there the student will identify and explore in detail an emerging issue suited to their personal interest.

Prerequisite

Current licensure or certification at the state or national level for Emergency Medical Services - Paramedic and ENGL 093 or appropriate score on the English placement test

Course Objectives

  1. Explain the role the EMS Agenda For The Future plays in directing the future of EMS.
  2. List and describe each of the 14 Attributes identified within the EMS Agenda For The
    Future.
  3. Demonstrate project management skills by conducting an intensive independent study of
    one of the 14 Attributes and providing the agreed upon project deliverable*** by the
    deadline specified.
  4. Provide a formalized (and synchronous) presentation of the project identified in
    Objective #3 presenting the results of the independent study project and presenting, or
    describing, (as appropriate) the project deliverable(s).

    *** A project deliverable is tangible evidence of the independent study conducted by the student
    and can take many forms. An example of a project deliverable may include, but is not limited to, a
    small scale research project, literature review, written report or article suitable for submission to an
    EMS trade journal, public education project or presentation, audio or video presentation, design
    and/or development of a web-site or pages, portfolio dedicated to a specific topic, etc. All project
    deliverables must be approved by the course instructor.
