EMSP 230 Paramedic Internship and Evaluation
Students will be able to participate in a variety of prehospital and hospital-based clinical settings to develop the necessary competencies to properly perform the various psychomotor (field) skills utilized by paramedics. Students will perform patient care in both simulated scenarios and with real patients under direct observation of paramedic and other clinical preceptors. This course will evaluate students' psychomotor skills as well as determine if they possess the appropriate knowledge (cognitive) and attitude (affective) attributes required of entry-level EMT Paramedics. The field internship portion of this course will follow the completion of hospital and field-based clinical rotations. The final weeks of this course will be utilized to prepare students for the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) written and practical paramedic examinations. Students successfully complete the HCC EMS program following successful completion of all clinical requirements and upon passing the final written and practical evaluations.
Hours Weekly
1 hour theory, 19.2 hours lab
Course Objectives
- Perform ALS and BLS airway management skills.
- Perform cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, pacing and synchronized cardioversion for appropriate
patients. - Safely and precisely access peripheral venous circulation via IV cannulation and intraosseous
routes, administer medications, establish heparin and saline locks, and draw blood utilizing the
closed vacutainer system and a needle and syringe. - Perform medication administration via the following routes: PO, SL, IV bolus and drip, IO, IM,
SQ, ET, PR and nebulizer. - Perform a comprehensive assessment and correctly communicate your findings verbally and in
writing on:
a. Pediatric patients
b. Adult patients
c. Geriatric patients
d. Obstetric patients
e. Trauma patients
f. Psychiatric patients - Perform a comprehensive assessment, formulate and implement a treatment plan for patients
with:
a. Chest pain and cardiac complaints
b. Stroke
c. Dyspnea or respiratory distress
d. Syncope or near-syncope
e. Abdominal complaints
f. Altered mental status
g. Anaphylaxis and allergic reactions
h. Poisoning
i. Traumatic injuries to include: fractures, dislocations, soft tissue injuries, spinal injuries,
lacerations, avulsions, amputations, crushes, shock, internal blood loss and burns
j. Environmental emergencies, including: heat and cold related emergencies and drowning
k. Endocrine emergencies
l. Neurological emergencies
m. Behavioral emergencies
n. Gynecological and neonatal emergencies
o. Infectious and communicable diseases
p. Pediatric emergencies - Correctly perform all skills currently listed in the DOT National Standard Curriculum for EMT-Paramedics.
- Serve as a team leader in each of the above prehospital emergency situations.
- Completion of the 24 competencies.
