EDUC 111 Child Growth and Development

Through the study of the early childhood and elementary years, the student will be able to describe the language, cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of young children, birth to 12 years. Instruction will focus on theories of child development, research methods, and developmental milestones. Knowledge learned in this course can be applied to parenting and to careers in early childhood and elementary education.  A 15-hour field experience observation of children in the community is required outside of class time. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Child Development requirement for an initial certificate in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. This course meets the MSDE Human Growth and Development requirement for Generic Special Education Infant/Primary, and Generic Special Education Elementary/ Middle. This course fulfills Part 1 of (2 parts) of the Child Care Certificate required for Child Care Teacher-Preschool. (EDUC-112 is required to complete the Child Care Certificate.)

Course Objectives

  1. Observe, identify, and explain the social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and language stages of development from infancy to age twelve.
  2. Explain how the developmental level of the child affects decisions regarding curriculum, teaching methods, and instructional materials.
  3. Describe the major approaches to theories of human learning.
  4. Understand the impact of culture, privilege, and oppression as they influence personal development and student school performance.
  5. Understand the important role of family in human development and the variety of ways individuals can fulfill those roles.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of exceptionalities and individual differences (including the major categories of exceptionalities) and discuss how culture, language, family, and educational experience affect these differences.
  7. Explain how collaboration within school teams and between families and schools promotes the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth of children.
  8. Explain how metacognitive processes deepen learning; observe and identify metacognitive awareness in children's behavior.
  9. Apply strategies of inquiry and exploration to research perennial and emerging issues impacting children's development.
  10. Evaluate the authority, credibility, and purpose of current and historically-significant studies related to child development.
  11. Demonstrate the effective and ethical use of a variety of sources to refine and support scholarly inquiry into perennial and emerging issues impacting children's development.
