Course Objectives

  1. Compare the healthy periodontium with a diseased periodontium both clinically and microscopically.
  2. Identify and describe various systemic diseases that affect the periodontium in pediatric and adult patients.
  3. Analyze and describe various risk factors, including immune and systemic factors that modify the periodontium and contribute to periodontal disease.
  4. Identify and recite the species of bacteria associated with periodontal health and disease, and describe the relationship of plaque biofilm on the host immune response system.
  5. List, describe, and differentiate the various periodontal disease classifications using the current classification systems for pediatric and adult patients.
  6. Assess and develop treatment plans for patients diagnosed with various periodontal diseases, using clinical decision making for periodontal care.
  7. Discuss the implementation of various therapies both current and future, for patients with periodontal disease, including adjunct therapies and prevention of disease.
  8. Identify the steps needed for health maintenance in patients treated with periodontal disease and the purpose of patient compliance for health and stability.
  9. Describe the clinical periodontal assessment and analyzation of dental radiographs for proper dental hygiene diagnosis and implement best practices for periodontal care.
  10. Using comprehensive case study samples, apply learned content to answer decision-making questions regarding periodontal diagnosis and treatment modalities.
