DHYG 208 Dental Materials
This course provides knowledge of the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of materials used for restorative and specialty dental procedures. Students will learn the principles and application of expanded duties for the registered dental hygienist in the lab portion of this course.
Hours Weekly
2 hours theory, 4 hours lab
Course Objectives
- Analyze the physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of various dental materials used for restorative procedures.
- List the indications and contraindications of various dental materials.
- Discuss specifically the locations of all six cavity classifications, using the Black’s Classification System.
- Explain the process and procedure for direct and indirect restorations.
- Demonstrate to competency level the placement of dental sealants while adhering to infection control protocol.
- Demonstrate to competency level the fabrication of whitening trays, alginate impressions, and gypsum models.
- Demonstrate to competency level the handling of specialty dental materials, equipment, and instruments used for Orthodontics, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, and Oral Surgery.
- Evaluate and document dental materials as they appear clinically and on a dental radiograph.
- Discuss the clinical detection and management of dental restorative materials during the dental hygiene visit.
- Demonstrate to competency level the care and maintenance of dental hygiene instruments.
