DANC 114 History and Culture of Hip-Hop

In this course, students will discover the multi-cultural roots of Hip-Hop and discuss its development in America and around the world. Students will also be exposed to elements of Hip-Hop culture including the various dance forms, graffiti, emceeing, and deejaying.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and chronologically organize key figures, important innovations, social and political influences, and historical events within Hip-Hop.
  2. Pose and address questions, and explore issues related to the creative expression of Hip-Hop in social and cultural contexts by analyzing movements, influencers, and artifacts.
  3. Incorporate risk-taking and creativity into problem-solving methods by using Hip-Hop constructs as a framework for self-expression in dance.
  4. Evaluate and analyze Hip-Hop's role in U.S. culture by exploring the elements of Hip-Hop.
  5. Apply theories and concepts that relate to the creativity and aesthetics of Hip-Hop within North American and other world cultures.
