CRIM 101 Introduction to Criminal Justice

A survey of the history, philosophy, and social development of police, courts, and corrections in a democratic society. Identification and operations of local, state, and federal agencies will be covered with criminal justice career orientation.

Course Objectives

  1. Define categories, features, and elements of the major crimes and understand the major defenses of the accused.
  2. Define criminal behavior, examine crime statistics, and identify methods of research.
  3. Discuss the nature and purpose of law in our society and the reasons for public concern about crime in the U.S.
  4. Identify the constitutional amendments and major court cases associated with the American criminal justice system.
  5. Identify the interdependent parts of the American criminal justice system and the stages in the administration of justice.
  6. Examine the history and functions of police in our society.
  7. Examine the subculture of policing and apply alternative ethical perspectives to the 4th Amendment's justification for use-of-force, to include deadly force.
  8. Describe the concepts of the bail system and criminal trial in the U.S. and explain one's core beliefs by identifying the ethical concerns related to preventive detention and its effect on indigent persons in the criminal justice system.
  9. Evaluate the history of corrections and explain one's core beliefs by identifying the ethical concerns in relation to the use of solitary confinement in our contemporary society.
  10. Analyze sentencing guidelines in the U.S. criminal justice system and recognize the ethical concerns related to discriminatory sentencing practices based on race and socioeconomics.
