BIOL 103 Human Heredity

This course involves the study of the inheritance of human traits, genetics problem solving, chromosomal analysis and its applications, the structure and function of DNA, causes and consequences of genetic mutations, and biotechnologies such as DNA identification, stem cell research, genome sequencing, and genetic engineering. This course is designed mainly for non-science majors. There will be a heavy emphasis on human genetic disorders in this course.

Course Objectives

  1. Communicate heredity concepts and terminology using appropriate symbols, notations, and
    vocabulary.
  2. Apply appropriate process to solve heredity problems.
  3. Analyze and evaluate the reasonableness of a solution to heredity problems.
  4. Describe and identify examples of Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance patterns.
  5. Explain the relationship between DNA, genes, proteins, and traits, and be able to illustrate
    this relationship with specific examples of genetic traits or disorders.
  6. Describe various types of genetic mutations as well as their causes and consequences.
  7. Describe chromosomal analysis and its applications in humans as well as common
    chromosomal disorders.
  8. Describe biotechnologies such as stem cell research, genetic testing, DNA identification, and
    genetic engineering, as well as their practical applications, impact on human society, and
    ethical implications.
