THET 125 Text Analysis

This course develops the skills necessary for the analysis and interpretation of plays from a variety of global cultures from the viewpoints of both audiences and practitioners. Students will be introduced to various and distinct play types and structures and the varied types of analysis and interpretation required by these forms. The course will include research methods for contemporary performance, including reviews, critical interpretation, and research for using primary and secondary sources.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify, organize, and apply critical theories and concepts related to theatre's basic elements and aesthetics.
  2. Articulate and generate open-minded and intellectually robust ideas and possibilities on the roles and materials used to bring a script to production.
  3. Analyze and evaluate dramatic scripts and theatre productions in terms of their theatrical requirements and relationship to the audience's social and cultural context.
  4. Apply course knowledge to a reflection and critical analysis of a theatrical production.
  5. Apply ethical reasoning in emerging theatre issues through identifying one's core beliefs, considering alternate perspectives and evaluating ethical choices including the use of information.
  6. Evaluate the authority, credibility, and purpose of primary and secondary sources.
  7. Write clearly and effectively using appropriate, relevant, and properly attributed content that demonstrates the writer's understanding and the standard conventions of writing about theatre.
