NURS 144 Practical Nursing Concepts
Building on previously introduced concepts, this course prepares students to assume the role of the practical nurse in the provision of care to patients of all ages. Experience in providing and managing care for a group of patients will be incorporated into clinical assignments. Clinical decision-making skills and competencies are developed through learning experiences in the classroom, clinical setting, skills laboratory, and simulation to provide safe, patient-centered care.
Hours Weekly
4 hours theory, 6 hours clinical
Course Objectives
- Promote patient-centered care by utilizing knowledge gained from theory concepts to meet the individual patient’s health needs while respecting their culture, preferences, and values.
- Provide patient teaching to promote health and optimum functioning.
- Collaborate with patients, families, and interprofessional team members to help manage acute and chronic illnesses.
- Apply effective communication techniques to assess data related to patient’s health status and to assist in the coordination and implementation of a plan of care.
- Demonstrate leadership and accountability by utilizing legal, ethical, and professional standards for the practical nurse to provide safe, competent, nursing care.
- Implement nursing interventions according to standards of practice, policies, and procedures to facilitate optimal patient health.
- Provide rationales for nursing judgments made in the delivery of care.
- Utilize evidence to support clinical decisions and nursing actions.
