HIST 104 History of the African American Experience: Reconstruction to the Present

This course will explore the African American experience in the United States from the period following the Civil War to the present. It will emphasize topics such as Jim Crow segregation, the Harlem and Chicago Renaissances, the Civil Rights era, Black Power, and modern black political movements, and particular attention will be given to the themes of resistance, education, culture, migration, and politics within the context of Pan-Africanism.

  2. Discuss how African-American experiences were shaped by global forces.
  3. Analyze the interconnectedness of global events in the context of African-American history.
  4. Compose an effective narrative that describes and analyzes African-American history in response to an analytical question.
  5. Analyze and evaluate the ways in which African-American history informs the political, cultural, and/or social issues of the United States.
