HMDV 251 Rouse Scholars Seminar IV
This course is a special one credit course for students enrolled in the Rouse Scholars Program. The purpose of this course is to extend topics taught in HMDV 150, HMDV 151, and HMDV 250. The seminar will cover selected leadership, group, and interpersonal development topics designed to help students explore leadership capabilities. A significant component of this course involves applying leadership skills to complete an extended community service project.

Course Objectives
- Identify and evaluate the qualities of “change agents” in the local or global community, and support example with relevant facts and stories applying the Social Change Model of leadership development.
- Analyze a community non-profit/service site and discuss what social issue or problem it addresses as well as the implications for individuals and communities.
- Identify components of social change, and analyze prior strategies in addressing an issue; consider community voice, sustainability, and assessment/impact.
- Examine resources, networks, and individual leadership strengths to formulate a comprehensive plan for sustainable change within the Rouse/HCC/local community.
- Identify types of power, define, and give examples.
- Identify strategies for group collaboration and explain the concepts of competition, cooperation, and compromise.
- Analyze individual “consciousness of self” assessments including the Myers Briggs and Strengths Quest to define values, beliefs, and skills in the context of leadership.
- Summarize concepts of collaboration, common purpose, consciousness of self, congruence, and commitment and apply to one’s own life experiences.
