DMSU 253 Clinical Sonography III

This course provides continued observation of all clinical duties performed in the ultrasound department, as well as basic instruction and scanning experience in abdominal, obstetrical, gynecological, small parts, vascular, echocardiographic, and/or other aspects of sonography. Attendance at an assigned clinical affiliate for 16 hours per week is required.

Course Objectives

  1. Prepare the patient for the sonographic examinations based upon the appropriate specialty.
  2. Prepare the exam room for the sonographic examinations based upon the appropriate specialty.
  3. Using proper technique, perform the sonographic examination of appropriate specialty.
  4. Demonstrate normal and abnormal Doppler and color flow patterns for specific organ systems.
  5. Differentiate between spatial relations on the sonogram: anterior, posterior, superior, inferior,
    left and right, etc.
  6. Choose the proper transducer for the exam and patient body habitus.
  7. Create the ultrasound image through proper use of instrumentation.
  8. Comply with the ultrasound department protocol.
  9. Analyze the patient’s chart for pertinent information.
  10. Demonstrate appropriate patient care skills.
  11. Assess the requisition to determine the area of interest.
  12. Demonstrate the proper departmental procedure for permanent image acquisition (PACS, Hard
    copy storage, etc.).
  13. Demonstrate the elements of a proper report by composing a written description and verbal
    report of selected sonograms for the supervisor or radiologist.
