This program is designed to prepare a person to become a registered nurse. It is both a career pattern and a transfer pattern. Graduates are qualified for positions in hospitals, community agencies, long-term care facilities, and other health care settings. Graduates are also eligible for direct transfer to selected baccalaureate nursing programs in Maryland. Learning occurs through classroom experience, simulated laboratory activities, and clinical assignments in a variety of health care settings. Students apply to participate in learning activities in the day or evening/weekend sections of the program. Graduates who successfully complete the courses of this program and receive a passing score on the exit examination are eligible to be considered by the Maryland Board of Nursing to write the National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurse licensure. By law, the Maryland Board of Nursing may deny admission to sit for licensure for a variety of reasons. These include conviction of a misdemeanor or felony, if the offense bears directly on the fitness of the person to practice nursing.

Anatomy and Physiology prerequisite courses must be completed within five years prior to admission to the first nursing course. If coursework exceeds the five year limit, a student may take an exam(s) to demonstrate competence or repeat the course(s). BIOL 107 and CHEM 103 prerequisite courses must be completed within ten years prior to admission to the first nursing course.

Admission to the Nurse Education program is based upon successful completion of required courses. MATH 132 or MATH 138 or higher, CHEM 103BIOL 107, and BIOL 203 must be completed with a minimum GPA of 2.25. Contact the office of admissions and advising to register for an information session regarding the associate of arts degree Nursing program.

A grade of “C”  (75%) or better is required in nursing, mathematics, and science courses.

Admission requirements also include a minimum overall HCC GPA of 2.0 and successful completion of a nursing entrance exam.

A grade of 850 or better is required on the HESI exit exam for successful program completion.

If considering transferring to a four-year institution, check the requirements of the receiving institution.

Accelerated Track

Application Code 08B

This is a competitive-admission accelerated format designed to prepare a person to become a registered nurse. This format of the Nursing program requires continuous study to complete all required clinical coursework within fourteen (14) months  Admission to the accelerated format of the Nurse Education program is competitive. Eligible candidates must demonstrate successful completion of all required General Education Core courses, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. CHEM 103, BIOL 107, BIOL 203, and BIOL 204 must be completed with a minimum GPA of 3.25. Contact the office of admissions and advising to register for an information session regarding the accelerated format of the Nurse Education program. All other nursing admission requirements must be met prior to admittance to the accelerated nursing track.

All procedures and requirements of the Accelerated Associate Degree Nursing track are subject to change.

LPN Pathway Sequence Track

The LPN Pathway Sequence is an opportunity for advanced standing in the associate of arts degree in nursing for those licensed practical nurses who meet specified criteria. Most general education coursework must be completed prior to entry into a transition course. Students apply to participate in learning activities in the day or evening/weekend sections of the program. NURS 142 and NURS 143 credit for LPN education and experience may be gained through examination and successful completion of NURS 124. Please contact the office of admissions and advising for information regarding admission requirements.

Graduates of an LPN program which has been validated for statewide LPN-ADN articulation will be granted transfer credit for NURS 142 and NURS 143 after successful completion of NURS 124.

A graduate should be able to

  1. 1. Promote patient-centered care that meets the patient’s health needs while respecting their culture, preferences and values.
  2. 2. Apply principles of teaching and learning, health promotion and reduction of risk potential to provide health education for patients across the lifespan.
  3. 3. Collaborate with patients and interprofessional team members in acute, long-term and community health care settings to advocate for safe quality care.
  4. 4. Communicate effectively to assess patient’s health status, and to develop and manage the plan of care.
  5. 5. Demonstrate leadership and accountability by utilizing legal, ethical, and professional standards to provide safe, quality nursing care.
  6. 6. Perform nursing interventions based on current standards of practice, policies and procedures to optimize the patient’s health.
  7. 7. Integrate professional knowledge, science and evidence to formulate nursing judgments.
  8. 8. Challenge traditional and existing nursing practices used to solve clinical problems by examining the evidence that underlies current practice.
