FYEX 100 First Year Experience

This course provides a highly interactive, critical thinking experience to help students understand themselves as independent learners, successful workers, and civic/global citizens. Through self-assessment, reading, writing, and reflection, students will develop habits of mind necessary to engage in academic inquiry, creative and critical thinking, and scholarly discourse with integrity and civility; develop the ability to articulate long-term goals as related to beliefs and values; and strengthen the capacity to appreciate diversity and effective intercultural and interpersonal communication.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Demonstrate familiarity with campus connections and resources that support independent learning.
  2. 2. Distinguish between emotional intelligence strategies and learning theories, and apply these in academic practices.
  3. 3. Identify a wellness problem and consider various perspectives to establish one's own position on the issue.
  4. 4. Analyze values and interests in order to set academic, financial, and career goals.
  5. 5. Use critical and creative thinking to evaluate and analyze resources regarding a wellness problem, examining arguments and proposing solutions based on analysis.
  6. 6. Identify and apply principles of integrity and civility in academic contexts.
  7. 7. Employ conceptual skills and knowledge of communications conventions to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
  8. 8. Demonstrate understanding of cultural beliefs and related ethical issues to increase awareness and an appreciation of diversity.
  9. 9. Employ information literacy in determining and locating resources to be evaluated and used ethically for academic purposes.
