ENTR 127 Legal Issues for a Startup

This course is one of a series of courses that provides students with the coaching and guidance to plan for and launch a new business venture. This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, tools, and resources to identify and understand the legal issues that a new venture must address. Topics include choosing the legal form of organization, ownership, intellectual property rights, licenses and permits, contracts and leases, and other legal and regulatory information.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Evaluate different legal forms of organization and choose the best for one's business venture.
  2. 2. Describe the protection provided by each of these forms of intellectual property: copyright, patents, and trademarks, and define how one's business can be protected under each form.
  3. 3. Research and identify the local, state, and federal legal requirements to register and launch one's new business venture.
  4. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the important terms, conditions, obligations, and protections of contracts and leases that one's business may be a party to.
