ENGL 097 Fundamentals of Writing

Students will acquire the skills needed to write and revise a series of multi-paragraph essays that demonstrate critical thinking. Students will also learn to write clearly and effectively using logical organization and appropriate styles of academic English. The varied writing assignments will be supplemented by topical readings, oral and electronic discussions, peer review, and grammar instruction as needed.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Implement the writing process, including pre-writing, drafting, and revising.
  2. 2. Demonstrate an awareness of the relationship among writer, audience, and purpose.
  3. 3. Create thesis statements that are clear, relevant, and indicative of critical thinking.
  4. 4. Support main ideas with specific, relevant details.
  5. 5. Compose effective introductions and conclusions.
  6. 6. Compose unified, coherent body paragraphs with topic sentences.
  7. 7. Organize essays logically and appropriately for a variety of purposes.
  8. 8. Compose grammatically correct and varied sentences in academic English.
  9. 9. Edit, revise, and proofread to achieve more effective communication of ideas.
  10. 10. Make connections between reading and writing by finding, using, and referencing specific, relevant textual evidence to support ideas.
