This area of study is designed for students who are interested in a career in social work, and in pursuing a transfer degree in social work. The area of study has been designed to transfer seamlessly into any of the social work programs offered at state universities in Maryland. The curriculum will provide students with an introduction to a variety of disciplines necessary for the effective practice of social work across a variety of social work career opportunities in education, community service, and social service areas, and will prepare students to continue their pursuit of social work at their transfer institution. Upon completion of the associate of arts degree in social work, students will be prepared to transfer to a four-year institution which offers a baccalaureate degree in social work.
General Education Core
Students enrolled in transfer patterns must take a minimum of 30 credits in General Education. Each student’s total of general education and required courses must equal at least 60 semester hours of credit.
Composition
Humanities, Arts and Literature
One Humanities Core Course (3 credits), plus one Arts Core Course (3 credits), plus one Literature Core Course (3 credits) satisfies the Humanities, Arts and Literature Core requirement, OR a World Language Sequence (8 credits), plus another Humanities, Arts, and Literature Core (3 credits) in a second discipline other than a world language satisfies the Humanities, Arts and Literature Core requirement.
Students planning to transfer to UMBC should take a World Language Sequence, unless they successfully completed four years of a world language in high school.
Social Sciences
One History Core Course is required and may be taken as either a Social and Behavioral Sciences Core or a Humanities Core. No more than 6 credits may be taken in History to meet Humanities Core and Social and Behavioral Sciences Core requirements.
