PUBH 251 Community Health Worker (CHW) Certification

The Community Health Worker (CHW) certification course provides the opportunity for students to learn about how to promote health and wellness in communities. This course covers the Maryland State Health Department's nine core competencies.

Eligible to enroll in stand-alone ENGL 121, grade of B or higher in PUBH 101, and permission of the department chair

Course Objectives

  1. Demonstrate advocacy and community capacity building skills to address various social determinants of health in the community.
  2. Apply effective oral and written communication skills in client and community interactions.
  3. Demonstrate cultural competency in community settings to build rapport and to support trust and engagement.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of ethics and confidentiality issues in accordance with legal and professional guidelines in community health.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of local resources and system navigation in health and social services.
  6. Apply care coordination support skills to facilitate access to health and human services across diverse community settings.
  7. Apply teaching and coaching skills to promote healthy behavior change.
  8. Conduct outreach to identify individuals needing assistance and to raise awareness of community health needs.
  9. Develop skills to help individuals find, understand, and use basic health information to improve their health.
