HIST 212 Asian American Experience

This course explores the dynamic history of Asian Americans in the United States from the Civil War era to the present, and the multifaceted contributions of Asian Americans to American society. Students will analyze the impacts of key historical developments, including early waves of Asian immigration, Jim Crow segregation and its effects on Asian communities, the Civil Rights Movement, and the rise of pivotal Asian American movements such as Yellow Power, the Third World Liberation Front, and contemporary advocacy efforts. The course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the Asian American experience in the United States. By examining both historical developments and their contemporary implications, students will gain insights into how Asian Americans have shaped and responded to American society, underscoring their contributions, challenges, and ongoing struggles for equality and justice within a broader global context.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe a historical issue and its causes and effects from a global perspective.
  2. Discuss how human experience is shaped by global historical events.
  3. Analyze the interconnectedness of global events.
  4. Apply introductory research skills that historians use to gather and interpret information.
  5. Employ historical concepts, methods, and/or theories to understand change over time.
  6. Evaluate the historical experiences of Asian Americans from Reconstruction to the present, focusing on migration, identity, and activism within a global context of migration and diaspora.
  7. Assess the impact of exclusionary laws, labor exploitation, and anti-Asian racism, and identify how Asian American communities have resisted these challenges in connection with global patterns of racial and economic exclusion.
  8. Investigate the contributions of Asian Americans to the economy, arts, sciences, and social movements, and explain how transnational influences and global networks have shaped these contributions.
  9. Critically evaluate contemporary issues affecting Asian American communities, such as immigration policy, racial discrimination, and political representation, and connect these issues to global migration trends and movements for social justice.
