HEED 115 Personal and Community Health

This course will synthesize the important facts and concepts of a variety of college-level courses including biology, physiology, anatomy, ecology, psychology, and sociology into a meaningful dialogue that will motivate students to modify their health practices to a high level of effective and enjoyable living.

A graduate should be able to

  1. Identify the dimensions of health and wellness including mental, emotional and sexual health and summarize their relationship to a positive lifestyle.
  2. Apply health-enhancing concepts related to chronic disease prevention and control including exercise, healthy eating, weight management and reduction of stress.
  3. Assess current levels of health and wellness, make decisions, and set goals as part of a personalized program to enhance health.
  4. Describe healthy sexual behaviors including respectful relationships based on communication and consent, the role of gender identity and sexual orientation, and safe and effective contraceptive and disease prevention methods.
  5. Discuss substance abuse as a public health issue including risk and protective factors, impacts on individuals and communities, and effective approaches to prevention and recovery.
  6. Analyze the health consequences of prejudice and discrimination based on factors including health disparity, race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status and discuss effective individual and community intervention.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate health related claims and to access valid and credible information, products, and services to enhance health.
  8. Apply strategies of inquiry and exploration to identify and evaluate resources discussing the influence of external factors such as family, peers, culture, media, and technology on health and wellness behaviors.
  9. Demonstrate the ethical and discipline-specific use of information when communicating about and advocating for personal, family, and community health.
