ENGL 217 The Bible as Literature

In this course students will engage in literary study of the Bible as an anthology, including narrative, poetry, law, epistle, wisdom, history, prophetic, and apocalyptic genres. In light of historical and cultural backgrounds, students will employ literary analytical methods to objectively interpret the original intent of each author, analyze literary forms, and examine the economic, historical, political, and cultural issues presented in the text. Students will also discover the Bible's historical development and explore its influence on literature, art, music, film, and contemporary popular culture.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and apply appropriate literary terminology and literary criticism (perspectives) in order to evaluate and analyze ideas within Biblical literature.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider economic, historical, political, and cultural issues in Biblical literature.
  3. Use evidence from literary texts and secondary texts to compose original and insightful literary analysis.
  4. Describe Bible's impact on and relevance to literature, art, music, and popular culture, both past and present.
