THET 110 Introduction to Theatre

This course will serve as a general introduction to the aesthetics and craft of the theatre to develop an appreciation of the art form including playwriting, acting, design, and directing through the critical appreciation of diverse and global performances with written analysis, creative practical projects, and analysis of written texts.  This course is designed for non-majors.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify, organize, and apply critical theories and concepts related to theatre's basic elements and aesthetics.
  2. Articulate and generate open-minded and intellectually robust ideas and possibilities on the roles and materials used to bring a script to production.
  3. Analyze and evaluate dramatic scripts and theatre productions in terms of their theatrical requirements and relationship to the audience's social and cultural context.
  4. Apply course knowledge to a reflection and critical analysis of a theatrical production.
  5. Apply ethical reasoning in emerging theatre issues through identifying one's core beliefs, considering alternate perspectives and evaluating ethical choices.
  6. Develop an appreciation for theater as a collaborative and global art tradition, analyzing its role in illuminating the human condition.
