SOCI 201 Minorities in American Society
The purposes of this course are to provide an understanding of sociology’s approach to minority groups, to introduce students to the history and circumstances of contemporary minority groups in the U.S., and to gain some insight into the future impact of minority/majority relations on American society and politics.

Course Objectives
- Identify basic concepts and organize information and ideas about the sociology of minority groups.
- Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider alternative theories about race relations and minority groups.
- Analyze and evaluate ideas or outcomes of different theories of minority group relations.
- Apply information and ideas to minority relations in other social contexts.
- Analyze how and why the American experience is defined by cultural diversity.
- Explain the origins of ethnic, racial, and gender hierarchies in America.
- Apply one's new understanding of minorities to an analysis of a specific minority group in America.
- Apply appropriate strategies to find relevant and credible information necessary to understanding a topic in the study of the sociology of minority groups.
- Recognize, identify, and apply ethical reasoning in the study of minority relations, and to an understanding of one’s own beliefs on ethical issues involving racism, sexism, and homophobia.
- Write clearly and effectively using appropriate, relevant, and properly attributed content that demonstrates the writer’s understanding of the sociology of minority groups.
