NURS 242 Concepts of Nursing II

Building on previously introduced concepts, this course prepares students to develop theoretical knowledge and clinical competencies in the provision of family-centered care for the childbearing and childrearing family unit. Essential concepts will include sexuality, reproduction, growth and development, and family. Emphasis will be placed on the application of nursing judgment to caring for childbearing and childrearing families. Clinical, skills laboratory, and simulation experiences will supplement didactic learning methods.

NURS 124, NURS 125, NURS 126, or NURS 143. Pre- or corequisites: SOCI 101, and COMM 101, COMM 105, or COMM 110

Course Objectives

  1. Provide family-centered care which meets the family’s health needs while respecting their culture, preferences, and values.
  2. Apply principles of teaching and learning, health promotion, and reduction of risk potential to provide health education to childbearing and child-rearing families.
  3. Collaborate with patients, families, and interprofessional team members to advocate for safe, quality care to patients from childbearing and child-rearing families.
  4. Implement developmentally appropriate communication techniques to assess family health status and to develop and manage a plan of care.
  5. Demonstrate leadership and accountability by utilizing ethical, legal, and professional standards to provide safe, quality nursing care to childbearing and child-rearing families.
  6. Perform nursing interventions based on current standards of practice, policies, and procedures to optimize the health of patients and families.
  7. Apply professional knowledge, science, and evidence regarding childbearing and child-rearing families to formulate nursing judgments.
  8. Examine the evidence that underlies current nursing practice in regards to childbearing and child-rearing families to solve clinical problems.
