HUMS 250 Community Services Practicum

Students work in the community in coordination with a faculty member. In addition to meeting core learning outcomes, jointly developed learning outcomes are identified with the faculty member, agency supervisor, and the student. The purpose of the practicum is to enhance the well-being of a targeted population. Students participate in a theory seminar session to engage in reflective discussion 2 hours every other week focused on experiences and the application of theory.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify student responsibilities associated with the community practicum.
  2. Identify student learning needs, agency service needs and the product to be offered to the
    agency.
  3. Describe the demographics of the population serviced by community agencies.
  4. Analyze the effect of demographics on social policy and the development and delivery of
    social services.
  5. Engage in reflective strategies to raise questions and to identify tensions associated with
    the practicum experience.
  6. Identify legal, ethical, social and diversity issues.
  7. Cite examples of collaborative care and variables that influence adaptation.
  8. Evaluate use of therapeutic approaches.
  9. Examine the impact of the community practicum on students and community partners.
  10. Evaluate the actual outcomes in comparison with the desired outcomes of the experience.
