FILM 216 History of Animated Film

This course is an interdisciplinary study of the history of animated film and will focus on the visual language, genres, and social attitudes of animated film. Major films and significant directors will be covered. This is a detailed critical guide to several animated motion picture projects from Eadweard Muybridge's initial motion photography experiments in 1877 to modern 3D film today.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify running themes in animated films.
  2. Discuss the directors’ use of mise-en scène and revolutionary camera angles.
  3. Analyze some of the editing techniques used as technology improves.
  4. Distinguish different cinematic styles and genres developed over the span of animation and anime.
  5. Compare and contrast key elements in film authorship, genre, ideology and theory.
  6. Analyze animated films and place them in their cultural settings.
  7. Discuss the trends used in contemporary animated film features and short films.
