ELEC 117 Linear Electronics

In this course students will learn the characteristics of electronic devices, such as diodes, transistors, and operational amplifiers, and their behavior in various electronic circuits. Specifically, applications of the following devices will be studied: rectifier diodes, zener diodes, bipolar junction transistors (BJT), and field-effect transistors (FET). Also, various applications of the operational amplifier will be studied.

Prerequisite

ELEC 107

Hours Weekly

3 hours lecture, 3 hours lab

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the operation and characteristics of semiconductor diodes, including forward and reverse biasing.
  2. Demonstrate schematically and functionally the operation of various rectifier circuits (half-wave, full-wave center-tap, full-wave bridge). Graphically analyze the conversion of an AC to DC signal.
  3. Measure and explain the effect of a capacitor used as a filter to improve DC signals.
  4. Analyze Zener diode operation by plotting the characteristic curves and calculating zener diode current and total current for voltage regulation.
  5. Identify the fundamental elements and characteristics of transistors (BJT and JFET), including differences between NPN and PNP transistors.
  6. Plot and interpret transistor characteristic curves including current, voltage, and operating point.
  7. Apply biased transistors for use as an amplifier and measure amplifier response to applied input voltage.
  8. Identify various transistor amplifier circuit designs including common-emitter, common-collector, and cascade amplifiers. State the benefits of each design.
  9. Construct differential amplifier and operational amplifier circuits using discrete transistors.
  10. Describe the characteristics, modes, and parameters of the operational amplifier (Op-amp).
  11. Identify and explain the operation of various Op-amp designs including inverting amp, non-inverting amp, and voltage follower.
