EDUC 292 Special Education Methods 6th-12th Grade

This course presents current practices in teaching students with special needs in grades 6 through 12. Students will review/demonstrate a variety of teaching techniques in the areas of functional skills, managing the learning environment, reading, writing, mathematics, and the content areas. Special focus is placed on transition education and services for adolescents. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Curriculum and Methodology of Instruction requirement for an initial certificate in Generic Special Education Secondary/Adult.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand and explain laws and current practices pertaining to the education of secondary learners with special needs.
  2. Understand, explain, and demonstrate instructional methods and strategies, accommodations, and modifications in basic and functional skills for secondary learners with special needs.
  3. Identify and describe appropriate strategies and interventions for content area skills and functional skills for secondary learners with special needs.
  4. List and describe service models for comprehensive transition for secondary learners with special needs.
  5. Describe methods of managing the learning and classroom environment for secondary learners with special needs.
  6. Understand and describe the IEP and transition goal development process for secondary learners with special needs.
  7. Identify and explain the process, strategies, and support of students with special needs and their families in secondary transition.
  8. Identify and describe how to plan and collaborate with families and other professionals when working with secondary learners with special needs.
