CARD 121 Cardiovascular Assessment Skills Lab

The goal of this course is to prepare students with the assessment and documentation skills needed to evaluate the cardiovascular patient. Students will become familiar with basic abbreviations used in assessing patients, guidelines for patient safety, privacy according to the HIPAA guidelines, and ethical issues related to the healthcare setting. Students will have the opportunity to practice their skills to perform a basic history and physical examination of their patients. The class is divided into two components, lecture and lab skills.

Admission to the Cardiovascular Technology program and BIOL 204/204L

Hours Weekly

5 hours lecture, 4 hours lab for 7 weeks

A graduate should be able to

  1. Implement care in an effective and efficient manner utilizing principles of professional practice, and legal and ethical standards.
  2. Identify the pathologies, complications, etiologies, signs, symptoms, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
  3. Perform a 12-Lead EKG and Stress Test identifying the indication and contraindications for stress testing.
  4. Demonstrate how to conduct a patient interview with appropriate documentation skills utilizing medical terminology.
  5. Identify normal values of and obtain correct vital signs on a patient including pulse, respirations, temperature, and blood pressure.
  6. Identify normal values and complete physical examination of the following: chest and lungs, heart and cardiovascular system, and neurological system.
  7. Recognize the ethical concerns relating to a specific issue or issues as they relate to the healthcare setting.
  8. Identify one’s core belief(s) in relation to an ethical issue or issues as they relate to the healthcare setting.
  9. Apply alternative ethical perspectives to one’s own, in relation to an ethical issue or issues as they relate to the healthcare setting.
