ARTS 251 Digital Methods: Structure and Message

This course provides an introduction to and exploration of the fundamental principles of graphic design. Through instruction, studio, and assignments, students will learn to utilize typography, shape, and image to convey a message through design solutions. Working with industry standard graphics software, students will investigate the use of composition, color, hierarchy, scale, rhythm, grid systems, and visual metaphor though creative and exploratory assignments. Additionally, this course will discuss the philosophical and ethical issues that electronic image making presents, and its effects through fine art, commercial art, and the media.

Course Objectives

  1. Solve creative problems related to the design process.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the elements and principles of design.
  3. Use a computer as an effective tool for problem solving, exploration, and the creation of a final graphic design product.
  4. Define and use the specialized vocabulary of graphic design.
  5. Explore the strengths and weaknesses of the computer as a design tool as compared to more traditional tools.
  6. Resolve specialized issues related to design including: communication of a specific idea or message, selection of format, layout illustrations, and the production of the completed work.
  7. Perceive and analyze the elements that make designs successful and unsuccessful.
