The Dance program is uniquely designed to provide students with a comprehensive and diverse education in dance. The curriculum includes a rigorous and focused approach to dance technique, creative process, historical and cultural knowledge of dance, while focusing on collaborative skills and critical thinking. This course of study serves as a guide for students planning to transfer into a four-year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree in dance. Students interested in pursuing the dance major are encouraged to meet with dance faculty advisors before registering. All dance courses are available to students who have met the prerequisites or have sufficient prior experience, regardless of declaration of major.

All incoming students wishing to major in Dance should be advised by the Dance Program Coordinator prior to their first semester at HCC.
Dance majors are expected to fulfill all requirements of a dance jury that will assess the student’s progress through a review of the student’s work each semester. Ongoing placement in Ballet and Modern Dance Technique classes is based on faculty recommendation through the jury process.
A graduate should be able to
- Identify, understand, evaluate, and apply ethical reasoning as it applies to the field of dance.
- Identify, generate and analyze ideas in multiple contexts within the discipline of dance.
- Demonstrate competency through application of knowledge learned in content-based areas of dance theory and history, and in skill-based areas of practice and performance.
- Demonstrate competency through application of knowledge learned in content-based areas of modern dance compositional theory and improvisation.
