URSC 101 Introduction to Undergraduate Research

This course will prepare students to engage in mentor-directed research by introducing basic principles of academic research. Students will learn how to access and read primary scientific literature, project design, and how to write a research proposal. Students registered for this course will understand that scientific assertions require supporting evidence. Emphasis will be placed on research strategy and design.

Course Objectives

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the research process and project design, and identify appropriate research methodologies.
  2. Recognize ethical issues related to research, identify one's core beliefs relating to ethical issues, and apply a research code of ethics to ethical issues.
  3. Use resources, including databases, to find resource material and learn to read, discuss, and critique primary scientific literature.
  4. Construct an effective research proposal.
  5. Describe the research objectives for a project effectively in oral and written forms.
