HUMS 110 Introduction to Human Services

This course surveys philosophies, attitudes, and approaches used in the field of Human Services. The history of, need for, and role played by human service professions are explored. Theory and practical skills are examined to ethically assist diverse populations in a variety of human service agencies.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the role of the human service associate in various settings.
  2. Describe the mission of a variety of human service agencies.
  3. Describe helping techniques and strategies in working with a vulnerable population of clients.
  4. Describe the importance of professional values and ethics in human service practice.
  5. Apply strategies of inquiry and exploration through researching cultural competency in the human service field and evaluate the authority, credibility, and purpose of those sources.
  6. Describe the process for case management in human service agencies.
  7. Demonstrate the ethical and discipline-specific use of information while researching best practices in human services.
