HMGT 160 The Travel and Tourism Industry

A study of the components of the tourism industry and their interrelationships is the focus of this course. The roles of tour companies, travel agencies, government bureaus, tourism associations and others that assemble, promote, and sell tourism services will be reviewed. Students will be able to operate within a tourism setting.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the history of travel and tourism.
  2. Explain the economic and political impacts of tourism including the role of the government.
  3. Explain how automotive, rail, and ship travel have impacted the travel industry, along with other travel motivators.
  4. Evaluate how accommodations and destinations play a vital role in tourism development.
  5. Explain how the convention and incentive travel industries have influenced the growth and development
    of the travel industry as it relates to segmentation of the tourism market and tourist motivations.
  6. Explain the various environmental, social, and cultural impacts of tourism on a destination.
  7. Describe the competitive advantages that technology provides in the tourism and travel industry.
  8. Evaluate how the industry can deliver quality tourism services, including bringing travelers and service suppliers together.
