HIST 216 History of India

This course will cover the history of Indian civilization from prehistoric times up to the formation of the modern nation states of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The course will include a detailed study of the cultural, political, religious, and geographical characteristics of South Asia, and it will focus on major historical trends, such as early cultures and civilizations, spread of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, early European contacts, impact of neo-imperialism, decolonization following World War II, and the current status of the various nation-states.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe an issue in Indian history and its legacy from a global perspective.
  2. Discuss how human experience in Indian history was shaped by global forces.
  3. Analyze the interconnectedness of global events in the context of Indian history.
  4. Analyze and evaluate the ways in which Indian history informs the political, cultural, and/or social issues of South Asia.
  5. Apply introductory research skills that historians use to gather and interpret information.
  6. Employ historical concepts, methods, and/or theories to understand change over time.
