EDUC 291 Special Education Methods Birth-6th Grade

Students will understand and use a variety of classroom methods and strategies appropriate to children from birth to sixth grade.  The course will focus on effective practices in different settings with all disability groups, as well as collaboration with other involved professionals and parents.  This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Curriculum and Methodology of Instruction requirement for an initial certificate in Generic Special Education Infant/Primary, Elementary/Middle School.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand and explain laws and current practices pertaining to the education of early childhood/elementary learners with special needs.
  2. Understand, explain, and demonstrate instructional methods, strategies, accommodations, and modifications for early childhood/elementary learning with special needs.
  3. Identify and describe appropriate strategies and interventions for content area skills for early childhood/elementary learners with special needs.
  4. List and describe special education service models for early childhood/elementary learners with special needs.
  5. Describe methods of managing the learning and classroom environment for early childhood/elementary learners with special needs.
  6. Understand and describe the IFSP/IEP goal development process for early childhood/elementary learners with special needs.
  7. Explain how to support students with special needs and their families to facilitate the transition from elementary to middle school.
  8. Describe how to plan and collaborate with families and other professionals when working with early childhood/elementary learners with special needs.
