CARD 121 Cardiovascular Assessment Skills Lab

The goal of this course is to prepare students with the assessment and documentation skills needed to evaluate the cardiovascular patient. Students will become familiar with basic abbreviations used in assessing patients, guidelines for patient safety, privacy according to the HIPAA guidelines, and ethical issues related to the healthcare setting. Students will have the opportunity to practice their skills to perform a basic history and physical examination of their patients. The class is divided into two components, lecture and lab skills.

Admission to the Cardiovascular Technology program and BIOL 204

2 hours theory, 1 hour lab

Course Objectives

  1. Implement care in an effective and efficient manner utilizing principles of professional practice, and legal
    and ethical standards.
  2. Use HIPAA guidelines to effectively implement a “time out.”
  3. Demonstrate how to conduct a patient interview.
  4. Apply appropriate documentation skills when recording in a permanent patient record.
  5. Show the ability to take basic vital signs.
  6. Perform a complete physical examination of the following: chest and lungs, heart and cardiovascular system, and neurological system.
  7. Operate a 12-lead electrocardiogram machine.
  8. Recognize the ethical concerns relating to a specific issue or issues as they relate to the healthcare setting.
  9. Identify one’s core belief(s) in relation to an ethical issue or issues as they relate to the healthcare setting.
  10. Apply alternative ethical perspectives to one’s own, in relation to an ethical issue or issues as they relate to the healthcare setting.
