BMET 114 Biomedical Device Fundamentals

Students will apply basic concepts of physics to the operation and interrelationships between electrical, mechanical, fluidic, and optical systems used in bio-medical devices. Students will be introduced to the basic components of various medical devices and instruments, their relationships, theory of operation, functions, and clinical applications.

Credits

4

Prerequisite

ENGT 100 and PHYS 101

Hours Weekly

3 hours lecture, 3 hours lab

Course Objectives

  1. Identify the names and functions of various components found in a variety of biomedical devices.
  2. Explain the theory of operation of various medical apparatus in terms of component relationships and the basic physics governing their operation.
  3. Analyze the operation and performance of systems (pneumatic, hydraulic, drive-mechanism, etc.) and understand how they are used in clinical equipment.
  4. Perform teardown and re-assembly of various biomedical devices in the course of repair and service.
  5. Demonstrate the proper and safe use of various medical apparatus.
  6. Conduct equipment safety and preventive maintenance inspection (PMI) and prepare written service reports.
  7. Define and demonstrate preventive maintenance procedures with respect to biomedical apparatus.
  8. State the purpose of regulations imposed upon medical apparatus and identify the major organizations that write and enforce the regulations.
  9. Identify and interpret rules and regulations governing the profession and adhere to professional standards of conduct.
